Pirate costumes work because they're forgiving and fun to put together. A brown or black corset over a white or cream blouse gets you most of the way there, then add a wide belt, boots and a bandana or tricorn hat to finish it off. Leather-look corsets add a rougher, more weathered feel if you want something closer to a ship captain than a tavern wench.
